| The two most popular algae species with our shrimp customers are Tetraselmis and Thalassiosira weissflogii. Tetraselmis is a large green algae that is high in fatty acids, protein, and calories. Thalassiosira weissflogii is a large diatom that is rapidly becoming popular in shrimp hatcheries. TW has a much better nutritional profile than Chaetoceros, is large so it can be used further into the PL stages, and contains DHA to improve neural function and increase survival rates. It also contains a large amount of chitin which reduces the need for chitin from brine shrimp. We also provide Isochrysis and Pavlova to a few hatcheries. Rotifers are also becoming a popular feed item in shrimp larviculture. Rotifers are an excellent feed for shrimp and provide better lipid bioavailability than brine shrimp, but have traditional not been used because of difficulty in producing them. However we have a system at www.Rotifer.com that makes it quite easy to grow rotifers at a low cost. Reed Mariculture has a few customers that have started using rotifers with their larvae and are seeing significantly higher survival rates and have faster growth rates.
