Interview with the Inventor

ClorAm-X®
Ammonia and Chlorine Neutralizer

To test ammonia in a system that has been conditioned with ClorAm-X you must use a Salicylate Method test kit and not a Nessler's reagent. A good quality, low cost test kit can be purchased from Aquatic Eco Systems - please contact Amy Riedel at 800-422-3939 or amyr@aquaticeco.com. The part number is #LM3304 and the cost is $52.45. This kit has enough reagent for 50 tests will last for 12-15 months (store in a cool, dry place). Replacement reagents are available (#LM3304RP) for $22.75.

Ammonia can be found in two forms - bound and free, and only free ammonia is toxic. Cloram-X converts the ammonia to a bound form so it is no longer a problem. The Nesslers process measures total ammonia and not free ammonia, while the Salicylate methods only measures free or toxic ammonia. If you measure a system treated with ClorAm-X using the Nesslers's process you will get a false positive from the bound (non toxic) ammonia.

ClorAm-X® is manufactured by AquaScience Research Group.  Reed Mariculture is a distributor of ARG products.

ClorAm-X® should be used (1) when conditioning new water for aquariums, tanks, ponds, and live-haul containers, (2) after or during water additions, (3) before adding new plants, invertebrates, fishes or amphibians to an existing aquarium, tank, or pond, and (4) to live-haul containers, during transportation of live fishes, amphibians, or aquatic invertebrates, to control and eliminate ammonia in the shipping water.

The United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has determined that the use of ClorAm-X® in water with fishes and aquatic invertebrates (e.g. lobsters, shrimp, crabs, clams, oysters) intended for human consumption does not fall under FDA jurisdiction. For a copy of the FDA's "letter of determination" please write or fax us.
